Information

The spirituality of Klosterneuburg Monastery and its closeness to people are hardly better understood than through the history of the Verdun Altar (1181), which, besides its material splendor, primarily served a purpose - the better understanding of the holy scripture and the holy Mass, even for those who were not literate during the Middle Ages. The connection of Klosterneuburg Monastery to the formation of this country can scarcely be illustrated better than through the history of the establishment of the Archduke's Hat (1616) as the sacred crown of the land. This crown, entrusted to Klosterneuburg Monastery as the resting place of Leopold III by Maximilian III as the third sacred Habsburg crown, can still be seen here today. The continuity and creative responsibility lived here are scarcely easier to grasp than through the history of the foundation stone laying of the Monastery Church (1114), during which the wine from the in-house vineyard is already being drunk - the same vineyard that has been operated by Klosterneuburg Monastery since the Middle Ages, now the oldest winery in Austria. Immerse yourself in the stories of this place and let past days come to life as you explore the Verdun Altar, the Treasury of Klosterneuburg Monastery, or the Baroque wine cellar. Discover numerous other stories that make Klosterneuburg Monastery a special place and a unique experience.
